The heart of it

He took the five loaves and the two fish, looked up to heaven, gave thanks, and broke them — and all ate and were satisfied. This is how it came: not all at once, but in castings — five, and five, and five, and five, and then two. Twenty-two passages from one letter, gathered like a net drawn up full. The First Casting

Philippians 1 — the work begun

  1. He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion, until the day of Christ Jesus.Philippians 1:6
  2. That your love may abound more and more, in knowledge and depth of insight — able to discern what is best.Philippians 1:9–10
  3. What has happened to me has actually served to advance the gospel.Philippians 1:12

Philippians 2 — the mind of Christ

  1. In humility value others above yourselves, looking to their interests, not only your own.Philippians 2:3–4

  3. God exalted him — that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord.Philippians 2:9–11

The Third Casting

Philippians 2–3 — the press

  1. Hold firmly to the word of life — that I may boast that I did not run or labor in vain.Philippians 2:16
  2. Whatever were gains to me I now consider loss for the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord.Philippians 3:7–8
  3. I want to know Christ — the power of his resurrection and participation in his sufferings.Philippians 3:10
  4. Forgetting what is behind, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward.Philippians 3:13–14
  5. Our citizenship is in heaven — and we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ.Philippians 3:20

The Fourth Casting

Philippians 4 — the guarded heart

  1. Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice!Philippians 4:4
  2. Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer, present your requests to God.Philippians 4:6
  3. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.Philippians 4:7
  4. Whatever is true, noble, right, pure, lovely, admirable — think on such things.Philippians 4:8
